The Story

Through this project, I aim to provoke people to think about what impact they are having when they buy clothes. I'm passionate about creating awareness around this subject matter for the environment and for those who are oppressed and abused in the industry itself.

The dress I made has two aspects, firstly the bodice made of fashion adverts to show the corporations side of the industry. This is only showing you how good the clothes look and focusing on the superficial one-sided aspect that we're shown. Then the skirt to show the environmental damages of our clothes by literally wearing rubbish. The fast fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world with 85% of the clothes that we buy ending up in a landfill. There are also many chemicals used in the process polluting our waters and air, making the countries inhabitants diseased and die in many cases. In the past 10 years especially we've had such a big move toward ethical fashion as a society and it's easy to avoid if you know what companies to buy from.

I highly recommend watching the documentary 'The True Cost' and looking through Tearfund's 'Ethical Fashion Guide'.
